The Explorer's Journey
At Somerset Academy Jacksonville, we believe every child is born with a natural desire to explore. Long before children learn to read, write, or solve equations, they ask questions, investigate their surroundings, and discover the world through curiosity. We believe education should protect and nurture that curiosity, not replace it with memorization. That is why our students are known as Explorers.
An Explorer is more than a mascot. It is a way of thinking. Explorers ask questions before accepting answers. They embrace challenges with courage, approach problems with creativity, and understand that mistakes are valuable steps in the learning process. They are curious learners, compassionate leaders, resilient problem-solvers, and confident communicators who understand that every new experience is an opportunity to grow.
At Somerset Academy Jacksonville, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. We believe the most meaningful education happens when students experience learning with their hands, minds, and hearts. Whether they are conducting science investigations, designing engineering solutions, growing food in a school garden, creating works of art, studying the ecosystems of Northeast Florida, serving their community, or presenting their ideas to authentic audiences, our students actively engage in learning rather than simply observing it. Every lesson begins with wonder and ends with purpose.
While exploration is at the heart of our philosophy, strong academic foundations remain our compass. Through explicit instruction in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts, students build the essential knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Exploration does not replace academic rigor. It deepens it by helping students understand why their learning matters and how it connects to the world around them.
We also believe that the character of an Explorer is just as important as academic achievement. Integrity, kindness, perseverance, responsibility, leadership, and respect are intentionally woven into every school day. Our students learn that success is measured not only by what they accomplish but by how they serve others, overcome challenges, and contribute to their community.
